You know the theory – a butterfly flaps its wings in one place and it causes a storm in some distant land. It’s a common plot device used in sci-fi and fantasy tales, but rarely do we see that sort of connection in real life, unless we look.

Filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul was seeking such a story in 2006 when he stumbled on the wild tale of an unknown American folk-rock singer who helped inspire white South Africans to protest apartheid beginning in the 1970s until the abhorrent practice of racial segregation ended in 1994.
